February 2018

Kentucky

January was a cold and bitter month. Mike Lewis attended and presented at the Maine Organic Farmer and Gardeners Association meeting. Getting there did not pose a problem but getting home took a few more days than expected, as fog and snow kept him grounded.

The following week was the 2018 Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group in Chattanooga, TN. KY AgrAbility was able to help with TN Display at SSAWGAgrAbility by sharing the exhibit space at this large four-day conference for vendors and growers in the southern states. It was well-attended and everything from gardening and farm machinery to heirloom seeds and organic fertilizer was available for purchase from the vendors in the exhibit hall. There was even a seed exchange event one evening.

KY AgrAbility has one of their biggest events coming up in February. The National Farm Machinery Show is being held in Louisville February 14 through 17 at the Fair and Expo Center. This is the largest indoor show of farm machinery in the United States. Last year the event saw over 300,000 attendees and almost 900 exhibits covering 1.2 million square feet. Those who come should make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and plan on an all-day event. The evening is reserved for the National Truck and Tractor Pull. Preliminary events will start each evening at about 8 p.m. with finals on Saturday. KY AgrAbility encourages everyone to come to this event and to stop by their exhibit in the West Wing Lobby near the roll-over tractor Display.

On April 19-21, the staff will be attending the American Occupational Therapy Association Conference and Expo in Salt Lake City, UT. KY AgrAbility has an OT on staff, Robin, who assists in class presentations and farm assessment visits. They also have Beth, who is a UK College of Gerontology professor and OT professional. There is always a great deal of interest from the attendees at this conference. The interest from the OT and PT classes has shown that this is a good way to introduce students and educators to AgrAbility.
