Take a look at progress in the Fort Riley high tunnel, a cooperative effort among Kansas AgrAbility, Fort Riley Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB), WTB Adaptive Reconditioning Program, and the Fort Riley Soldiers and Family Assistance Center. Photo 1 shows one garden bed soon after planting on May 3 and Photo 2 shows the same bed on June 21 after some of the cabbage and broccoli were harvested (in the foreground). Soldiers have 24/7 access to the garden, which is within walking distance of their living quarters. Harvested vegetables are distributed among the soldiers working in the garden and others in the WTB. From KS AgrAbility, soldiers learn to accommodate their limitations and how to grow vegetables in small plots. The Adaptive Reconditioning Program also includes a cooking class where soldiers prepare recipes using vegetables grown in their garden.
