Indiana AgrAbility, the Indiana Chapter of the Farmer Veteran Coalition, and Hoosier Uplands Economic Development Corporation hosted a full-day in-person workshop for military veterans interested in farming and agriculture on April 7 at Purdue's Feldun Agricultural Center near Bedford, Indiana.
More than 20 veterans and guests learned about pork industry opportunities in Indiana, intensive gardening techniques, soil health, NRCS programs for veterans, and managing farm stress issues. In addition, AgrAbility's occupational therapist intern, Erin Gick, discussed the importance of protecting joints from injury while doing farm work. The group enjoyed a great barbequed pork lunch sponsored by the Indiana Pork Producers.
Indiana's 9th District Congressman, U.S. Representative Trey Hollingsworth, attended the workshop, made brief remarks, and visited with veterans about their agricultural interests.
This workshop followed similar programs held in October 2020 and January 2021.
After so many zoom meetings and online programs over the past year, the chances to get together in-person have been enjoyed by participants, staff, and speakers alike! Additional veteran-focused gatherings are planned for late spring and summer at locations around Indiana.
