South Carolina AgrAbility's new associate and a graduate student traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to attend the national conference and training workshop. The new associate attended training for new staff and enjoyed the essential information to use in the program. Staff acquired important information on all aspects of AgrAbility and the opportunities it can bring to the state. The team was also able to attend informative sessions that broadened understanding of AgrAbility and the many purposes it serves. Overall, the conference was successful in the associate's eyes and brought home important information for the program's success.
The team also conducted a site survey with an individual inquiring about assistance. The person initially asked about getting an equestrian lift to be used by the particular education class at West Oak High School to allow students with mobility disabilities to mount and dismount the horses at WOHS. Discussions were had about either a lift mounted to one of the existing structures on-site or a lift mounted to the school's horse trailer. Following phone conversations, a site visit was conducted to assess the viability of this as an AgrAbility case. After discussions with Dawn, it was determined that this project was outside of the scope of AgrAbility, as this would be for a school, not a full-time farmer in South Carolina. The next step in this process is to work with AbleSC to help find potential funding sources outside of Vocational Rehabilitation.
