An algae bloom has invaded Lake Victoria, turning the waters green. To address the health and safety concerns of fishing communities in and around the lake, AgrAbility for Africa staff have prioritized educating residents about algae and cyanobacteria, including how to keep themselves and their animals safe.
For many, the major concerns include the foul smell of the water and skin irritation after contact. AgrAbility for Africa is working to raise awareness about the hidden dangers-such as
fish safety, animal safety, and the risks of using contaminated water for cooking and cleaning. In partnership with Uganda Junior Rangers, they are informing communities that boiling the water does not eliminate the toxins. At the same time, they are expanding training in clay water filter production as a low-cost solution for purifying water-an urgent intervention for Lake Victoria's island and coastal communities that lack alternative water sources.
